| Amsterdam during this time was a colourful, cosmopolitan port, full of international influences and religious diversity, and Sweelinck’s keyboard music mirrors this culture. Even more than a contemporary such as William Byrd, Sweelinck delights in dividing and subdividing his melodic material such as chorale hymns, accumulating intensity through rapidly moving variants on a given theme. |
