| As a one-time pupil of Franz Liszt, (1841-1886) winning admiration from Richard Wagner (1813-1883) at an early stage in his career, Giovanni Sgambati (1841-1914) pursued a vocation outside the mainstream of 19th-century Italian music. Rather than opera, he was drawn above all to Germanic instrumental models of the concerto, quartet and symphony,
prefiguring in this way the music of Martucci and Respighi as they sought to reclaim those models within an Italian tradition. |
